Maintenance and replacement of mechanical ventilation

Maintenance of mechanical ventilation, why is it necessary? The ventilation system is always on and operates throughout the day. You hardly even think about it. If you don’t do anything to the mechanical ventilation system, it will continue to do its job. The downside is that the functionality of the system decreases over time. Maintaining the mechanical ventilation is necessary for both the system’s operation and your health.

Maintenance of your mechanical ventilation system: what tasks are performed?

The installer conducts the maintenance service extremely professionally, ensuring it will last for years to come. What will the installer do during the maintenance service?

  1. A preliminary measurement is taken to assess the system’s status.
  2. All vents are removed and the ventilation holes are sealed before all ventilation channels are cleaned.
  3. The ventilation unit and associated motor are cleaned.
  4. The air vents and roof duct are cleaned.
  5. Nadat alles is gereinigd worden de ventielen weer terug geplaatst en het systeem weer in bedrijf gesteld.
  6. Once everything is cleaned, the vents are reinstalled, and the system is put back into operation.
Finally, a final measurement is taken to check the adjustment of the fan and vents, and adjustments are made if necessary.

Consider your health

The mechanical ventilation system constantly maintains the right balance in the air. The circulation of air and the humidity level are closely monitored, ensuring ideal air quality. Newer homes are so well insulated that molds and bacteria can quickly find their way indoors. The mechanical ventilation system prevents this from happening, addressing any potential health issues.

The extracted air can contain molds and high levels of moisture, which accumulate in the system’s filters over time. The result? Less clean air in the home. To prevent this, it’s essential to have the mechanical ventilation system regularly maintained. Health problems that may arise include:

  • Allergies
  • Coughing
  • Coughing
  • Respiratory issues
  • Nausea

WTW systems with balanced ventilation benefit even more from maintenance. In these systems, fresh air is brought in by a motor, and ensuring that the incoming air is clean is crucial.

Replacing the mechanical ventilation system
There may come a time when the system needs to be replaced. This could be due to the fan making an annoying noise or reaching the end of its average lifespan of 15 years. After this period, the fan may start causing inconvenience. The unit no longer functions optimally and consumes a lot of power, much more than intended. The latest ventilation systems are very energy-efficient. Depending on usage, you may recoup your investment within 2 years. In fact, over time, you can truly save energy as the system runs 24 hours a day.

Maintenance of the mechanical ventilation is beneficial for the system

Mechanically operated ventilation systems consume electricity constantly. Modern models feature energy-efficient fans that operate on direct current. If the system is not properly maintained, it will have to work harder to achieve the same results. As a result, your mechanical ventilator will consume more electricity, leading to up to 10% higher electricity consumption. Additionally, the increased workload often leads to more noise production, which can be very annoying. A professional ventilation system requires regular maintenance.

Maintaining your mechanical ventilator yourself
In some cases, you can also maintain the mechanical ventilation yourself. Cleaning filters and vents is something you can do on your own. If you can’t clean the filters properly anymore, they need to be replaced. All vents must remain in the same position and be properly reinstalled. Failure to do so will disrupt the ventilation adjustment.

We do not recommend cleaning the ventilation unit yourself. Poorly performed maintenance can disrupt the balance. For unit maintenance, it’s best to hire a professional, which should typically be done once every two years. If the entire system needs to be checked, you can do this once every four years.
